6th Grade Curriculum

Sixth grade marks the beginning of middle school at Huntington Catholic. Students are challenged to think more critically, take greater ownership of their learning, and deepen their Catholic identity. This year lays the foundation for leadership, responsibility, and faith-filled decision-making as children prepare for the upper grades.

Faith & Religion

  • Focus: The Old Testament

  • Curriculum Resource: St. Mary’s Press – Catholic Connections: Middle School Handbook

  • Students explore salvation history, learning how God revealed Himself through the Old Testament and how it points to the coming of Christ. Prayer, reflection, and liturgy help connect biblical lessons to their daily lives.

Language Arts

  • Reading comprehension across novels, nonfiction, poetry, and Scripture-based texts

  • Expanding vocabulary, grammar, and spelling skills

  • Writing multi-paragraph essays, creative pieces, and research projects

  • Developing critical thinking skills in reading and discussion

  • Continued emphasis on effective communication through speaking and presentations

Mathematics

  • Strengthening skills in fractions, decimals, and percentages

  • Applying concepts of ratios, proportions, and integers

  • Introduction to pre-algebra concepts, equations, and problem-solving

  • Exploring geometry, measurement, and data representation

Science

  • Studying earth science and physical science concepts

  • Topics may include geology, astronomy, weather, and energy

  • Applying the scientific method through labs, experiments, and projects

  • Encouraging stewardship of God’s creation through science connections

Social Studies

  • Focus on world history and geography

  • Exploring ancient civilizations, cultures, and their impact on the modern world

  • Learning map skills, research methods, and critical analysis of historical events

  • Understanding how Catholic values shape our view of history and culture

Technology

  • Expanding keyboarding and word processing proficiency

  • Learning to use spreadsheets, presentations, and multimedia tools

  • Practicing safe, ethical, and responsible digital citizenship

  • Applying technology to support core subject learning and research

Sixth grade is a year of new responsibilities and deeper discovery. At Huntington Catholic School, students are encouraged to grow as independent learners and faithful disciples who see God’s presence in history, science, and their everyday lives.
