2nd Grade Curriculum

Second grade is a very special year at Huntington Catholic. Students continue to grow in their academic abilities while deepening their Catholic faith in preparation for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. This year builds confidence, responsibility, and a stronger sense of community, helping children take important steps in both their faith and learning journey.

Faith & Religion

  • Focus: Preparing for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist

  • Curriculum Resource: Sadlier – “We Believe”

  • Students learn about forgiveness, God’s mercy, and the gift of Jesus in the Eucharist. Daily prayer and Mass experiences help children live their faith in meaningful ways.

Language Arts

  • Expanding skills in phonics, fluency, and vocabulary

  • Building comprehension through a variety of texts—stories, informational passages, and faith-based readings

  • Strengthening writing skills with structured assignments and continued Catholic handwriting practice (Writing Our Catholic Faith)

  • Encouraging oral communication through reading aloud, presentations, and group discussions

Mathematics

  • Mastering addition and subtraction facts

  • Introduction to multiplication and division concepts

  • Understanding place value and working with larger numbers

  • Developing problem-solving skills with real-life applications

Science

  • Exploring the living environment, physical world, and earth science

  • Learning to make predictions, record observations, and conduct simple experiments

  • Encouraging curiosity about God’s creation through hands-on learning

Social Studies

  • Learning about communities, citizenship, and responsibility

  • Exploring traditions, history, and how people live and work together

  • Understanding the importance of rules, leaders, and cultural diversity

Technology

  • Continued development of basic computer skills

  • Introduction to simple typing and word processing projects

  • Reinforcing internet safety and digital citizenship

  • Using multimedia tools to support classroom learning
